BIM Coordination ≠ Clash Detection: KEY DifferenceS? 🧩
A lot of people use these terms interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing 🧐
Clash Detection is just a process of running a model through a clash detection tool e.g. Navisworks to find conflicts between elements e.g. a duct cutting through a column. If set correctly it’s an automated process, but just because a clash is detected it doesn’t mean it’s actually a problem….⚠️
BIM Coordination, on the other hand, is a whole workflow and It involves:
Managing model federation 🧩
Setting up priorities 🎯, tolerances 📏, and rules 📜 for the clash detection exercise
Filtering out false positives 🚫
Assigning responsibilities 🧑💼
Ensuring clashes are actually resolved ✅…not just reported 📄
So, if someone says, “We did coordination” but only ran a clash report, they’ve only done half the job 🙃 Ultimately, successful Project BIM Coordination is about communication, collaboration, and continuous refinement, not just detecting problems, but actively solving them as a team!
